A collection for young and old, some of Mary’s stories are part of the centuries old oral tradition of Greece and the Middle East. A retired educator, Mary’s art of storytelling weaves humor and pathos as her characters come to life offering modern day relevance. Daughter of Greeks born in the Turkish Ottoman Empire, Mary Ziavras has unique insight into the quaint customs and beliefs of a society that was annihilated after the Greek/Armenian Holocaust 1915-1922. Evolved from firsthand accounts, she allows the reader a glimpse of this vibrant society through windows to the past.

"Mary Ziavras' tales are, like all good folk stories, woven with wonder, whimsy and magic, and the wealth of her Greek heritage... rich as baklava!" (Amy Friedman, author of syndicated column Timeless Folktakes from Around the World)

"Mary Ziavras's collection puts us back in touch with folktales in all their playful, mischievous, and occasionally tragic suggestiveness.  With artfully contrived artlessness, she reanimates the tales for modern audiences, connecting readers, viscerally, to 'once upon a time'." (Maria Tatar, Professor Chair: Committee on Degrees in Folklore and Mythology, Harvard University)

"Ziavras will delight you, reaffirming the truths folktales have imparted since Aesop's Fables." Chris Farlekas, Times Herald Record

Vocal Recital:
"I Have a Dream"
Soprano Julie Ziavras & pianist-composer Steve Margoshes

Puffin Foundation Cultural Forum

(20 Puffin Way
(Formerly East Oakdene Ave,
off Teaneck Rd.)
Teaneck, NJ 07666

Chanteuse/opera soprano Julie Ziavras and pianist/composer Steve Margoshes will present "I Have a Dream", a concert about the American dream in song, the struggles of displaced people here and elsewhere who long to assimilate; their hopes and struggles captured in song.

The program includes black-influenced music, Negro spirituals, two charming songs selections from Montsalvatge's song cycle about the Negro population in Cuba, music of Jewish émigrés such as Kurt Weill and Irving Berlin. Berlin paved the way for a new generation of "sons of" Jewish immigrants who wanted to assimilate and work in tin pan alley promoting their music as new popular American music, helping to create a new American popular music with a style of its own that borrowed from Yiddish theater, Eastern European Jewish and cantorial roots and African American music. The program will include works by Gershwin and writers of the famous Broadway scores.

The concert will present songs by the Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis, one of Greece's greatest songwriters and a key voice against the Greek junta, aggression and oppression, from his cycle "Mauthausen" a piece rarely performed in the US about a young girl taken by the Nazis to the Mauthauzen Concentration Camp. It was written to the poetry of a Greek-Jewish lyricist Iakov Kambanellis who was himself imprisoned by the Nazis.  We will also hear some of Theodorakis' popular songs about the Greek refugees who escaped the Turkish ethnic cleansing in Asia Minor. These songs talk about life in the ghettos of Athens where these refugees settled.

Special for this performance is Julie performing Joan Baez on guitar and "I Have A Dream," a composition by Steve Margoshes that brings the inspirational words of Dr. Martin Luther King's speech to musical life. It was first performed at the Martin Luther King Celebration in Atlanta by invitation from Coretta Scott King.

Julie has been invited by the Stamford AHEPA, a chapter of the national charitable and philanthropic organization, to present a musical program dedicated to the music of the well-known Greek composer Stavros Xarchakos. Xarhakos has composed more than 45 albums and CDs, many which have became phenomenal hits in Greece, and have joined the ranks of great popular art. With memorable melodies and lyrics, the songs are about realism and social justice and the importance of dignity in the face of sorrow and grief. He is influenced by the music of the Asia Minor and the themes of the lower working classes of the Athens-Piraeus area of the 1930s. Xarhakos has written that, “Folk music is one of the basic, essential sources of the Greek tradition in song….” He has scored approximately 40 films and countless television and theater productions and various symphonic scores. One of his most popular creations is the music for the 1983 Costas Ferris film, "Rembetiko", highlights of which are to be presented in this program along with song selections from other rembetiko songwriters such as Tsitanis.
Julie will be joined by an ensemble of musicians led by the composer/arranger Spiros Exaras, who will also play classical guitar. The ensemble includes Kostas Psarros, bouzouki, Petros Hadjopoulos, piano, Steve Vavagiakis, percussion, and Catherine Bent, cello. Doors open at 2:30 p.m. and the musical program begins at 3:00 p.m.

Tickets are $35 (advance purchase), $40 (at the door), $10 students. Wine and cheese included. Call Nickolas Nikas for more information: 203-637-8615 or niketes@yahoo.com.

She will accompany herself on guitar and will be joined by Kostas Psarros, bouzouki and Ken DeAngelis on vocals. The festival will begin at 5:00 with an art exhibition featuring works by prominent local Greek artists and painters including; Diana Shobrys, writer and visual artist, Ayla Maloney, potter.
